What are the rules of volleyball and how can I get onto the team?

Volleyball at my middle school is not a major sport where I live, yet there is a pretty strong team. This summer I will be going to a camp where I will be taking volleyball lessons an hour and a half a day, but I am not too familiar with the rules and don’t know how I can get onto the team. Can you help me by
a) stating the rules of volleyball and
b) teaching me some drills/exercises that will help me on the team.

Also, I play squash and some tennis, and I used to play basketball. Will these help with my hand-eye coordination?

( A ) Server must serve from behind the restraining line ( end line ) until after contact.

( B ) Ball may be served underhand or overhand.

( C ) Ball must be clearly visible to opponents before serve.

( D ) Served ball may graze the net and drop to the other side for point.

( E ) First game serve is determined by a volley, each subsequent game shall be served by the previous game loser.

( F ) Serve must be returned by a bump only. no setting or attacking a serve.

( A ) Maximum of three hits per side.

( B ) Player may not hit the ball twice in succession ( A block is not considered a hit ).

( C ) Ball may be played off the net during a volley and on serve.

( D ) A ball touching a boundary line is good.

( E ) A legal hit is contact with the ball by a player body above and including the waist which does not allow the ball to visibly come to a rest.

( F ) If two or more players contact the ball simultaneously, it is considered one play and the players involved may not participate in the next play.

( G ) A player must not block or attack a serve.

( H ) Switching positions will be allowed only between front line players. ( After the serve only ).

Jamie Davis (England) Squash Player, where are you?

I was wondering if anyone could help me get in touch with my old buddy, I lost contact with him years ago, cheers
Olli

I personally have no idea who this is or how to get in contact with him, and I doubt anyone else on here does either (sorry) but why not try one of these people finder links? Try to be as specific as possible, but try to see if you can find the most reliable site (if that is possible on the internet)

Why "mainstream " sports get all the limelight?

I have noticed the major stations like CNN n BBC and all the papers seem not keen on reporting the not -so- popular sport events. Best reference is the recent badminton world cup in Madrid, I don’t remember seeing or hearing any coverage on that event, but, come on, its badminton’s "world cup", don’t you think it deserves some fair share of coverage? Don’t you feel sick of hearing the name of Tiger, Fedex, Schumacher or Beckham? or can you name any world champions of table tennis, squash, lawn bowl, bowling, beach volleyball or sofball?

Unfortunately, for fans of less-popular sports, major networks simply provide what is popular to their viewers. They primarily broadcast events and news that will bring them the most viewers and consequentially, advertising revenue.

While some argue that the major networks discriminate against sports such as soccer (in the U.S., or simply Football elsewhere) in providing lesser coverage – the networks are only providing what is desired by the majority of viewers reflecting the consensus of the population – and not the other way around.

Fortunately, with the advent of the Internet and a billion-or-so cable and satellite television channels, fans of just about any sport can find web casts and television broadcasts that cover everything from soccer, to tennis, to nude female-wrestling competitions and more. Isn’t technology great?! :)

How strong a planet’s gravity must be to squash a human into a size of 7 centimeters in height?

My robot friend is 6,6 centimeters in height. So I have wondered how strong a planet’s gravity must be to squash a human into this size? 5 times the gravity of the Earth? 6 times? More? Less?

Very strong, probably 20 times

Can anybody recommend a dunlop squash racquet (racket) for an intermediate/advanced player?

I have found that lilliwhites in London sell dunlop equipment very cheaply because the owner (Mike Ashley) is also the owner of dunlop/slazenger/umbro/karrimor (the list goes on). If anybody could recommend one or two racquets I would be very grateful.

Advice for new vegetable gardener?

I just bought my first house and I really want to have a vegetable garden. I’ve bought tomato, cherry tomato, green pepper, brocolli, squash, zuchinni, watermelon, green beans, carrots and corn. Am considering sweet potato. I’ve read the packages and have started indoors those that the package suggested to. I put them in a flat, and once sproated I transfered them into those little pots you can plant ouside. I’ve also had a compost pile going for 6 monthes. I’ve read some articles, so I think I sort of know what to do, but I would love any advice, pointers, and lessons learned from any experienced gardeners.

thank you!
Good point-I live in Oklahoma. My last frost date is March 25th.

You don’t say where you live, so I’ll start by saying you need to pay attention to your "last frost" date. I’m in zone 5, and it’s May 15th here.

You will want to wait to plant most of those things until your last frost date.

Broccoli, you’ll want to put in 6-8 weeks before the last frost….it’s likes cool weather. I usually start seeds around now, and plant them out about the third week of March. Once really hot weather arrives in late June, they don’t do so well. Then I start more seeds in mid-July, and plant outside in mid-August. The second crop really takes off as the cool fall weather comes, and they can take light frosts.

The tomatoes and peppers, I’ll plant "starts" (the young plants) about a week before the last frost date. Zuccini, watermelon, green beans, corn and squash – I plant the seeds directly into the ground around the last frost date. Carrots you can direct-seed into the ground 4-6 weeks before the last frost. They’re fairly tough critters…they take a long time to germinate though. (and they don’t like to be transplanted – I don’t recommend starting them inside)

Most of those things are going to want full sun. Beans and broccoli will do fine with half day sun (broccoli actually does better with 3-4 hours of sun for me – helps them live longer into the heat of summer)

Biggest "newbie" mistake is planting things TOO CLOSE TOGETHER! Those cute little tomato and pepper plants look just fine about a foot apart when you plant them….but they get BIG! 2 1/2 to 3 feet apart! Really!! Trust me! The zuccinni…three seeds per hill….and imagine a plant that is 4-5 feet across. The watermelon will travel…the vine will crawl about 20 feet! It needs ROOM!! If you actually get small watermelons, slip a flat rock under the fruit to lift it off the soil. You avoid soil-borne rot troubles that way.

Sweet potato needs a LONG growing season – and it likes it hot. If you are Zone6 or more northerly, consider covering your sweetpotato hill with black plastic for the few weeks before you plant to help warm the soil up.

Any seeds started indoors I try to do only 3-4 weeks ahead of planting them out. Also – you need to "harden off" the seedlings. Take them outside when you’re a week away from planting out, put them in full sun for 2-3 hours, increasing the time each day, and bringing them in at night if the nights are still cool. It lessens the shock on them.

——————————–

Okay – if your last frost date is in March – you’ll have NO trouble with sweet potatoes. I wouldn’t bother "pre-warming" the soil.

The broccoli, on the otherhand….if you can choose a shadier spot for them, I’d try 2-4 hours of sun a day. Otherwise, they’re going to just get too hot, and they aren’t going to produce well. if you haven’t sown all your broccoli seeds, I’d save some, and start them inside in august, planting them out in mid-late September> you should have good broccoli crops coming in November and into December.

Is a good tennis player likely to also be good at squash?

How similar/different are the skills involved in excelling in both games? What about the strength, speed, and racquet swing required?

Please answer only if you have had experience playing both.

help the squash plants are falling to the ground?

the squash i planted are big and beautiful, with blooms, but now befor they even produce the squash, the plants are falling to the ground. can someone tell me what to do with them, or whats wrong with them.
the squash plants are verry large , blooming and are not wilting. they are verry healthy, they just want to fall over on the ground. Can it be because they are so large and what do I do about it.

I think what I hear you are asking is why the squash plants are not growing upright. Squash are sprawling, vining plants naturally. They are supposed to do what you are seeing them do. You yourself say they are not wilting and look healthy.
I was irritated by the sprawly nonsense of some of the squash in my garden, so my ex put in 2 upright 2×4′s about 6 feet apart, and then he nailed a 2×4 across these two, creating a sort of upside-down "U" shape. Then we tied string vertically and horizontally on this frame, and trained the squash plants up the string. It is surprising how well the heavy fruit held up.
This plan is described in the book "Square foot gardening" .

This Face (CD)

This Face (CD)

Somebody ring up Dick Cheney! Art-noise collective Gnaw have accidentally created quite the aural counter-terrorism interrogation tool with their 2009 collaboration, This Face. Call it anti-music, if you will, because although there’s clearly a unified artistic agenda supporting the album, and even certain genres peeking through the generalized chaos (industrial, black metal, etc.) to most listeners this will simply sound like a blistering racket suffused in static. Dissecting it piece by piece, beginning with arguably the most “conventional” elements, one finds Khanate vocalist Alan Dubin roaring, screeching, mewling, and whispering ever-misanthropic lyrics like some rabid hyena being squashed under a dying rhino. Then there’s drummer Jamie Sykes (Burning Witch, Thorr’s Hammer) who, when he doesn’t step out for a cigarette and miss the action entirely (see “Watcher”), lays down an at times erratic, frequently frantic foundation ranging from blastbeats to doom-stomps, with tribal rhythms and exotic percussion sprinkled in between. And perhaps most importantly, there’s multi-instrumentalist Carter Thompson (Enos Slaughter, etc.) who provides the backbone of the more structured songs (“Vacant,” “Shard,” etc.) by handling guitar, bass, piano, and any number of mystery home-built “instruments.” Thompson also reportedly supplied a number of field recordings and it is these elusive found sounds, along with the similarly vague contributions of sound designers Jun Mizumachi and Brian Beatrice, that give This Face its final, dissonantly disorienting touches. Attempting to describe or deconstruct the album any further is an exercise in futility, insofar as there are far too many sounds whose origins one can’t even be fathomed amid the layers of fuzz distortion obfuscating everything. Suffice to say that the vast majority of music consumers will see no reason to torment themselves with Gnaw’s little masochistic art project; but for daring adventurers to whom melodic, harmon..

yeah its really good i have one my self i reccomend you getting it

is this a good diet and exercise plan for 13 year old girl?

i’m 5’3 and 13 years old, i now weigh 142 lbs as i lost 12 lbs in a month by sticking to this diet and exercise:

breakfast: weetabix and i put fruit in the bowl with it, piece of fruit, low sugar orange juice

snack: nutri-grain bar (a cereal bar)

lunch: ham or turkey wholemeal sandwich with lettuce and tomatoes, apple or banana, yogurt, flavored water

snack: low fat cheese on crackers

dinner: wholegrain pasta with low fat cheese or brown rice or vegetable soup or cottage pie or steak with veges or spag bol etc and for drink i’d have no added sugar squash

dessert after dinner: no added sugar jelly, fruit smoothie with yogurt,
low fat custard, low fat rice pudding, weight watchers ice cream

snack: piece of wholemeal toast

20 min jog exercise every day
15 mins of doing steps things on stairs

2 lessons of p.e at school every week (1 lesson lasts an hour)
swimming once a week (for an hour or 2)
netball club once a week (a lesson lasts 1 hour and 30 mins)

am i exercising/eating to much or less? or this to much for my age? am i to much over weight?

Firstly I’d like to say good on you for not being silly about this and just starving yourself! The diet sounds really well balanced. In regards to the exercise your only doing 35 min a day, so it doesn’t seem too much as it is recommended to do 30 min a day. Unless of course you’re feeling like you’re not up to it. The p.e lessons, swimming and netball all sound fine because it’s spread out through the week. It sounds like a great plan but if you feel it’s too much speak to your parents or get a doctor to do a plan up for you.

Again, good on you for doing it the healthy way! :) Hope this helps!

Didn’t it suck that it was only when heel Morrison was out of the picture that Burke got a title shot?

I really would’ve liked to have seen John Morrison(heel) vs. Elijah Burke(heel) and I would’ve hoped Burke would’ve squashed him. Elijah Burke(heel) is a much more deserving champion than John Morrison(heel) was.

Yes! I couldn’t agree with you more! Elijah Burke is my favorite wrestler, and I totally think he deserves it WAY more than Morrison!

P.S. Please pick me as best answer

How do you cut up a buttercup squash?

Im trying to make a turkey dinner with squash as a side dish and I don’t know how to cut up the squash to steam it. I know it should be in chunks but how far from the rind do you cut and how much of the soft part do you remove?

Most any type of hard winter squash(not spaghetti squash though) Can be split in half, scooped out and roasted in the oven with butter, honey, maple syrup, olive oil, herbs and seasonings. They can be peeled, cut into chunks and roasted with oliveoil and herbs, steamed, boiled and mashed. Can also be split and scooped out and filled with italian sausage or meatloaf mixture and roasted. If you’re cutting it up to steam it, just peel the skin off it and remove the seeds and membrane before cutting it into chunks to steam. Some types don’t steam well and just turn to mush.

Which squash racket should I buy?

I’ve been using a crappy Walmart entry level Wilson racket for over a year now. I think it was $20. I’d like a new racket but I have no idea what to buy. I’ve heard Dunlop is a good brand? Any suggestions for models and brands? Thank you

Yes, Dunlop is a good make

What are some sports you can start at 14?

I’m 13 and a half now, but for summer, I was thinking of taking up a new sport over the summer. I take life guarding courses currently and did gymnastics from when I was 9-10 [progressed from level 1 to 5 ^^ but was taken out because I fell off a beam, and my parents refused to put me back in it].

I’m not very good at sports, but I’m naturally pretty flexible and fast. Are there any sports I could take up at 14? If it’s not too old?

>> I was thinking of Squash, except I don’t know anything about it, but they have lessons over the summer for people 14-17, so it might be age appropriate?

In theory can i serve a tennis serve in a squash game?

As long as my positioning is correct and the ball strikes the correct part of the court am i able to serve in squash as a player does in tennis… i.e. overhead? Are there any restrictions on the height of the racket etc….

not an expert, but i’m 99% sure that is ok, played with a couple of decent players (county level) and they have varied their serve a fair bit

Are racism and intolerance issues that Egypt should try and blame a country for?

"Egypt warned against racism and intolerance in Canada after a young girl was expelled from a football tournament for insisting on wearing an Islamic headscarf, the foreign ministry said on Thursday." (http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/afp/egypt_canada_sports)

Egypt is the country that just put someone in jail because he, who is also a Muslim, spoke up against the current dominating government, and against a violent Muslim culture.

Egypt should stick to its own boarders, and let Canada, one of the best places to live, govern itself.

Personally, I think the ref, who is also a Muslim, made the right call in expelling the girl from the game.

I would like to see one of the non conforming/dominating eastern countries change rules because a non-Muslim person could be excluded from a certain activity! There is probably a greater chance of Putin actually turning out to be a nice guy than one of those countries changing rules for non Muslims.

no different than canada complaining to the US about everything we do. now you finally get a taste of how it feels to have idiots complain about everything you do

How do I tell what kind of squash plant that I planted in my yard?

Do you suspect that there are several McCain body doubles campaigning instead of McCain himself?

Some days he’s wrinkled and crinkled. Some days he’s botox bloated and wrinkle free. Some days we see droopy eyes, some days normal looking eyes. I’ve seen footage where the "McCain" clearly can’t raise his arm up to his nose, and other times he’s able to raise his arm over his head! Supposedly, McCain can’t use his hands to press a "send e-mail" button, but then he’s on Rachel Ray twirling spatulas and using fryer tongs with ease. Is the real McCain in a wheelchair somewhere while these doubles (in stage makeup provided by Rob Zombie) go out and campaign in his place?
Can that explain the daily shifting policies when these body doubles improvise? Maybe he learned a few Saddam lessons in Iraq after all?
Did the McCain campaign squash the graphic McCain Had Cancer ads because the public might notice that the scars don’t look exacrly the same scene to scene? Am I jusr crazy or……………

No I do not

Had there ever been an official tennis/badminton/squash match where one player had faced two or more players?

No.

My brother is having quadruple open-heart bypass surgery tomorrow.?

with blockages of between 95 and 100%. My questions are:
1. Can you direct me to a site which explains the procedure in simple terms
2. What caused it? He’s 62, doesn’t smoke, was a champion squash player, a little overweight, drinks wine in moderation.
3. Is it heriditary? (My mother died of a heart attack when she was 76)
4. At 48, should I be be having my heart checked?
Thank you all so much for your answers, support and prayers.

1. An American Heart Association site is shown below which discusses bypass. Basically they take a vein (most likely out of your leg(s)) and use it to bypass clogged arteries feeding blood to your heart muscle. To begin with there is some swelling of the legs because the veins are gone but this gets better over time.

2&3.Genetics are a strong indicator or coronary artery diease. Both my parents had problems ( my mother died from it) and I found I’d had a massive heart attack (silent) within 5 years when I was 44. When I went in my cholestrol was 110. Plaque ruptures are a likely cause of blockages. See link.

4. You really should get checked out throughly. The risks are extremely high. I suggest you discuss the matter with a cardiologist if you have an opportunity. I personally would not rely on a GP. I have included a link on heart attack symptoms. If you get dizzy or winded go NOW.

Bonus: Heart attacks can have many different symptoms ranging from the classic Fred Sanford movie heart attack to no symptoms at all. Silent heart attacks are particularly dangerous because the heart compensates by working harder and enlarging resulting in heart failure which is deadly. The moral is to go to the hospital if you feel the least bit wierd. That little pain that came and went may be your only warning.

I’m a CHF patient, 22% EF.

Why doesn’t the US just give Gaza tons of money and use it to bend them to their will like they do in Egypt?

The threat of losing that funding can be coercive.

After Israel gets paid, Turkey and Egypt get a big cut too. Nobody complains about that though.. because hating them isn’t a sport.

The reason i suspect they don’t do this (besides them being terrorists and all) is because there is a correlation between aid given to Palestine and increased violence.

….. interestingly the ZION HOSNY MUBARAK will announce Egypt as a JEWISH STATE after the successful massacre of Palestinians.

Because the Egypt may get incentives for each killings and get more especially for the murder of infants and kids in Palestine.

And some arab states will follow the suit and particularly the King of Saudi Arabia will turn the Holy Mecca as Synagogue – a Jewish place of worship.

Can you freeze fresh squash and how?

I’m going out of town and would like to freeze some squash. How can you do this and how would they taste later? Thanks for any suggestions.
We love pan saute’ squash with onions and a small amount of butter. Was wondering if frozen squash would do well frozen, thawed and cooked this way?

It all depends on what you are planning to do with the squash.
If you are going to mash it in the future for pies and such, the best that I found is to, cut it into pieces, boil until the skins are soft and peel off the skins. The squash will be mushy, I measure the exact amount I need into freezer bags and freeze. If you are not planning to use mashed, then I just peel the skin off, cut it into chunks and freeze uncooked. Both have worked great for me. I usually do pumpkins for pies in the winter. One summer I froze enough to make over 200 pies! Could have made enough for our entire community for Christmas! LOL

how can i control my hyperactivity? (intfeers with functioning at school alot. please help).?

well first of all i have adhd so obviously being hyper is normal for us. (i dont take any meds either) well im hyper everyday but sometimes i get majorly hyper and it can be really frustrating. it happens about once or twice a month (can happen anytime not just during periods) and one time it happend 3 times in a week,

i normally enjoy being hyper and me and my friends find it funny but when i go really hyper its not fun at all, i shout and scream at people run around and im laughing like normal but inside my head im shouting why cant i stop!! its like a motor driving me and i cant stop, sometimes it can be damaging because i do things like run into walls and doors and bang my head against walls and tables and stuff and sometimes it really hurts. today was dangerous aswell becaue i got so bored i sat under a basketball hoop and got hit several times but i just didnt care. the point to this is, that it can really annoy me and just makes me feel out of control like my head gunna explode and i juz want to scream for ages of knock myself out and i hate it.
then after about 20minutes of this phase i just automatically go on shutdown, which makes it even harder when i have lessons to do. and its hard enough functioing well in my normal hyper mode.

another thing im concerned about is that almost all the time i have no interest in sex what-so-ever but some days when im super hyper its all i talk about but really crude and joking around about it and its not in my character at all. sometimes i feel hyper and tierd at the same time.
only a couple of weeks ago i felt depressed not getting much hyperactivity at all and now this week ive just skyrocketed into my hyper levels. ibeen this hyper twice this week so far.

how can i control this? what do i do? is this just my adhd or are other things affecting this??

for diet i only drink squash at school. and food is just a normal sandwich and a bag of crisps, i try to avoid sugary stuff and only eat a small amount of sweets on the weekend.
did u even read my question?? i have stated i have adhd at least twice u douche
CANT ANYONE TAKE MY F*CKING QUESTION SERIOUSLY??? GRRRRR IM GETTING SO PISSED OFF NOW! I NEED HELP AND I AINT GETTIN IT!!!
kk lol thanks for that answer :D ive been waiting for decent answer. thanks v.much for taking me seriously

Have you ever been evaluated for bipolar disorder? The way you describe your "hyper" periods and your crashes sounds more like bipolar than ADHD.

Most of the time, ADHD just means that a child has a learning style that their parents and teachers don’t understand. Some kids need to be able to move around, touch objects, or talk to themselves in order to make sense of the lessons in class. When they’re confined to a desk for an entire class period, their need to move conflicts with the teacher’s desire for them to sit and be quiet. That doesn’t work for all kids.

If you’re truly ADHD, you need more physical exertion between classes to help you get through periods of enforced stillness. Can you add a PE class to your schedule? After you go to a class and put your books down, do you have time to go back outside and jog or run for 2 or 3 minutes?

As I said, maybe you’re bipolar instead of ADHD. A physical exam with some extra-thorough blood testing *and* an evaluation for bipolar is probably a good idea for you. A battery of personality tests might be a good idea, too – if you have a mental health professional who can tell your school that your schedule needs adjusted to put you in classes with teachers who understand you need more movement, then you’ll at least have some ammunition on your side to get the guidance counselor and principal to work with you.

How do you control it without drugs so you can sit through a class period? Exercise between classes, an extra PE class, maybe use your study hall period or lunch period for exercise. I don’t know what your school rules will allow.

Good luck.

Could I become a good squash player in 6 weeks?

It depends on how fit you are D and how much you really want to play such a pointless game.

Why do people hate Trevor Murdoch and Lance Cade, so much?

They are actually decent wrestlers, both guys are well trained. Lance Cade was trained by Shawn Michaels and Trevor Murdoch trained at Harley Race’s Wrestling Academy.

My second question,
Should WWE RAW just get rid of the World Tag Team belts?

It doesn’t mean anything anymore, hell the tag team champions and the number-one contenders were all squashed by one guy. And simply because WWE doesn’t push or even care about the Tag Team Division. Agree or Disagree?

I also hear that they, along with MVP, watch tapes of guys like Misawa & Kobashi, some of the top Japanese talent in order to become better wrestlers, and it shows. The one problem with Cade & Murdoch is that they’re nowhere near over with the crowd and are sort of bland, but then again, WWE pays barely any attention to the tag team division.

And yeah, the WWE mindset is that it’s much easier to take two random yet over guys and put them into a team than to get a real tag team over. And once that team gets success, it’s almost immediately broken up. The WWE tag division is extremely weak.

Can chicken be added to this butternut squash recipe?

I have a butternut squash tart recipe, but would like to add some chicken to it. I’m not very culinary aware so any advice would be helpful. The summerised recipe is as follows, but not sure whether chicken is even appropriate?

Caramelised onion and Butternut Squash Tart

4 teaspns olive oil
3 yellow onions, thinly sliced
salt and freshly ground black pepper
1/4 cup white wine
1 teaspn chopped fresh rosemay or thyme
1/2 medium butternut squash, peeled, seeded and cut into 1/2 inch dice
Wholewheat pie crust

Add onions to oil and sprinkle with 1/2 teaspn salt. When onions are done add 2 tablespns wine. Cook until most of the moisture has gone. Season to taste.
Steam the squash over boiling water until tender.
Prehead oven to 375F.
Spoon onions into center of crust and sprinkle squash evenly over onions. Fold edge of crust over filling. Bake 25 minutes.

Sure I would use chicken breast slice thin and fan it out over the top of the tart.
