You shouldn’t judge a coach by his skills to hits shots. You can only judge him by the ability of his students to win games. I have seen some of the great Pakistani coaches, not all of whom where great players, coach from outside the court. They hardly ever hit a shot and yet produced national/junior champions. I am sure the same happens in other countries too.

slicing the ball cause a great amount of back spin, therefore will drop suddenly off the wall
You don’t “need” …
You don’t “need” to slice the ball. If you can hit a good flat ball it might get you a point as well. However, after you master the normal flat shot, slicing it to shorten the bounce will come pretty naturally. Don’t try to force it, as you’ll probably worsen your technique at first.
