How long can vegis be out of the frig and still be safe to eat?

I came in from the grocery store last night around 6pm and thought I put everything away in the frig that needed to be cold. Well I just realized I left Zucchini, Squash, Romaine lettuce, mushrooms, and fresh corn in the bags from the store (my house is very cool with temp around 70:( I hate to think I have to throw it all away but I don’t want to get sick either. Please HELP with any suggestions! This is a learning lesson for sure for me to slow down. Thanks everyone

don’t freak!!!!! its ok to have food sit out one night trust your instinct if its smelling bad or mushy or turning into a color its not supposed to then its bad but don’t waste it you’ll def. be o.k. think of the people in other places that don’t have a fridge.

If you noticed at the store all that stuff you bought was not refrigerated in the store. It sits out until it is purchased. Everything should be fine. If the lettuce was in a hot car it might be kind of wilty.

As long as your veggies are fresh and haven’t been processed, they should be fine. The main reason the grocers keep them under refrigeration is to extend there shelf life. That’s about it.

are you serious… have you noticed that most places have vegetables in the open, that’s because they don’t need refrigeration,…. where do you think corn comes from??? everything is grown outside and can be left outside , only thing that can happen is that it will rot or get moldy but that takes days

The vegetables you’ve named – with the exception of the lettuce – do not need to be refrigerated. Were they in the chilled department when you bought them? No, because leaving them in a vegetable rack where they can get the flow of air they need is the best storage option. Having the veg rack in a dark place helps prolong their lives too.
Meat, fish or dairy produce (yogurt, cheese, butter, margarine, cream, milk, etc) MUST be kept in the fridge, between 0-8 degrees Centigrade, preferably 0-5 degrees, which is what fridges are set at. Hope this puts your mind at rest, as only salad veg needs fridge treatment.
